According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 4.6 million pup bites recorded in the country every year. Many of these involve children under the age of five.

Summer season sees a spike in the number of doggy bites involving children. That is probably because there are more children playing outside during these months, and are likely to come in contact with animals.

Most doggy bite injuries involving children seem to involve the head and neck areas. In one study published in 2011, researchers found that approximately 7% of all doggy bites are caused by family pets. If you have a pup in the home, don’t simply assume that you can leave a child unsupervised around the animal, without any consequences.

The research also found that 27% of the injuries involved the cheeks, while 21% involved the lips, and 8% involved the nose and ears. In approximately 66% of the cases, children suffered puppy bite in more than one area of the body. The most common doggy breed involved in attacks was the pit bull.

This summer, make sure that your child is legally supervised by an adult, when he’s playing in a park or a playground. Teach children the right way to behave around animals. Teach your children not to pet an unknown puppy or a stranger.
